Stargazing in San Pedro de Atacama: Which Tour, Which Telescope, Which Moon?

4 min read

Four people point up at a star-filled night sky with the Milky Way arching over dark trees

For the darkest sky, book around new moon; on moonlit nights choose a tour that shows the Moon and planets through the telescope. Most tours here last two to three hours, drive 15 to 30 minutes out of town and finish with a hot drink or wine. What differs is group size, equipment, age limits and what the operator promises about moonlight.

The moon question

Moonlight dims the Milky Way and faint galaxies. Three tour pages say so plainly. The astronomy-and-wine tour tells you to check the lunar calendar before booking, because moonlight can affect what you see. The Roofless AI goes further and says it only runs when lunar illumination is below 50 %. The premium three-telescope experience adapts the programme to the moon: the Milky Way and deep sky on dark nights, lunar craters and planets on nights with the Moon. The guided stargazing tour is described as a stargazing or moon-and-planets excursion.

Check the lunar phase for your dates before choosing.

What each one adds

The Stargazing Experience meets at the school E26, a few metres from Caracoles and the Apacheta square. It includes telescope use, blankets, astrophotography, a snack and drinks including red wine, pisco sour and juice, and drops off at hotels near the centre. It does not drive out to the ayllus such as Quitor, Yaye or Coyo.

The Andean astronomy tour combines modern astronomy with how Andean cultures read dark shapes in the Milky Way, and sends a complimentary photo by email. It includes a poncho and coffee, tea or red wine.

The Roofless AI uses two 16-inch telescopes, caps the group at 12 and has a virtual guide named Vera who answers questions. Its page says families with younger children can book a private tour instead.

The three-telescope tour splits the group so that one half stargazes while the other has a photo shoot, and offers wine, pisco sour, hot chocolate and cheese.

Which to book

Choose The Roofless AI if you want the darkest sky and a small group, and nobody in your group is under 10, over 70 or pregnant. Choose the Stargazing Experience for the simplest booking, which also has 822 reviews, or if a child under 10 is coming, since its page lists it as not suitable only for children under 4 and people over 80. Browse all stargazing tours, then keep your El Tatio morning for a different day: see the sunrise geyser guide.
